The clear rim lets you watch the cotton candy form without hot sugar flying all over the house, and its suction-cup feet keep it stable on the table or countertop. The Nostalgia machine has some nice safety features for home use, as well. (If you upgrade to the Complete Start Up Package, you get the machine with extra cones and some sugar, too.) This machine includes two reusable plastic cones so you don't have to keep buying and throwing away (err, recycling) the paper ones. It can also use hard candies-even sugar-free hard candies-instead of the standard sugar. However, it does not come with the bubble-shaped safety shield other models include as standard-if you want one, you have to buy the shield separately, and it's not cheap.ĭimensions: 21 x 21 x 14 inches | Weight: 23.1 pounds | Power: 1,030 watts | Capacity: 2-3 servings per minute | Extras: Sugar scoop, spare parts kitĬute and fun but with a small countertop footprint, this retro-styled cotton candy maker is what you need for kids’ parties or family movie nights. (The brand recommends using only corn syrup-based candies made without butter or starch, so steer clear of items like butterscotch or caramels.)ĭesigned for long-term use and re-use, the VIVO disassembles completely, with a removable bowl and motor head that are easy to clean (plus a spare parts kit in case you lose track of a screw). Try peppermints to make a cloud topper for a mug of hot chocolate or a roll of Life Savers to make a rainbow of cotton candy. You can use favorites like Jolly Ranchers and Nerds to create custom flavors and colors. With more than 1,000 watts of power, the VIVO can satisfy a whole birthday party of screaming kids in short order: It'll make two to three servings of cotton candy per minute.Ī really cool thing about this machine is that it also works with hard candies instead of just granulated sugar. Turn it on, pour in some sugar, and you'll have magical threads of colorful candy floss in just seconds. This heavy-duty machine is the same kind you'll find being used at carnivals and amusement parks, but it couldn't be easier to use. “I questioned whether it was right for her to be wearing it in the video for her audience, and both management and label said, ‘Yeah.’ But they didn’t want to say anything, so I said, ‘You know Britney, we need to go back to a trailer and see what else you’ve got. You flirt with the audience.”ĭick rejected an outfit Spears wanted to wear, worrying it was too sexy for her age. It’s like a burlesque, isn’t it? You have the feathers and everything – you don’t deliver the goods until the final moment as the lights go out. “So you just sort of think, ‘Oh my God, what am I going to do?’ So I remember putting the shot list a bunch of close-ups, so you could have that as a little montage. “You don’t want to fire all the guns at once and reveal the big set,” says Dick. The opening shot of Spears’ lips reflected how iconic a figure she’d already become. I said, ‘This bit about the Titanic, what am I going to do with that? How does that fit in?’ And she goes, ‘Oh, you’ll think of something!’ So, you just go, ‘I’ll write something, and we’ll see if they like it.’ And as I recall, I don’t think there were any revisions on my treatment.” And then suddenly the brakes squeal, and you do an about-turn and you go back to 19-whenever it was when the Titanic sank. “You’re going, ‘What the fuck?’ I’m on Mars, which obviously means somewhere in the middle of the 21st century. So now you have to just try and make this idea work.”ĭick found the song’s infamous Titanic interlude baffling. You know, everything is now going to be red. Which for me, makes life a lot easier… Having Britney say, ‘I want to be on Mars’ immediately narrows it. “And she says,’ Well, I want to do this video. The sci-fi concept for the “Oops!” video came straight from Spears herself. The director shared the story of his time with Spears on the new episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. and Zomba Music Publishers Ltd.Nigel Dick had already directed videos for Guns N’ Roses, Oasis, and many others by the time he met Britney Spears in 1998, but even the “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine” clips couldn’t come close to matching the culture-shaking impact of “…Baby One More Time.”ĭick went on to helm the videos for “(You Drive Me) Crazy” and “Sometimes,” and when it came time for the all-important first single from Spears’ second album, Oops!… I Did It Again, she and her team turned to him again. Moving on to the characters (best thing about this series), the original FMA focussed mainly on Ed and Al and on their struggles to regain their bodies, whereas Brotherhood also explores other characters to great detail at the same time. This becomes less of a problem as the series progresses, with plenty of new music being introduced to support the story as it reaches the finale. The background music which play during the episodes usually fit very well with the situation, although some tracks seem to be overused a little at first. The majority of the openings/endings are a pleasure to watch due to fantastic animated sequences and theme songs. The voice acting is of an excellent and consistent quality, and I think that pretty much all the characters have voice actors which suit their personalities. The various battles are consistently exciting to watch, but somehow get even better towards the end of the series. The action scenes are brilliant and VERY well animated, with a variety of alchemy techniques and other talents being displayed nearly every episode. The facial emotions of the characters are also perfectly presented. Compared to the original FMA it's a bit simpler but that's just because the original set a very high standard to follow. The animation in FMA Brotherhood is crisp and very well done (although it does sometimes dip a bit in quality). By the final episode, all loose ends are neatly tied up and what's left is a hugely satisfying epilogue. The plot is full of clever ideas and unpredictable twists that link various parts of the story together. However, after trying to look at it from the perspective of someone who's new to FMA (not comparing it to the manga nor the original), I believe that the pacing works and it manages to tell an intriguing story effectively with little confusion. Events that took up half a volume of the manga and had spread though a few episodes of the original anime were now shown in just a single episode. I admit that as I've seen the original and read the manga, the pacing of Brotherhood seems to start off being VERY fast (I finally got used to the pacing after That myth should be dispelled, as there's only one word to describe this series - EPIC. Brotherhood is meant to be a remake of the original, this time sticking to the manga all the way through, but there were people who thought it would spoil the franchise. After years of training, the Elric brothers set off on a quest to restore their bodies by locating the Philosopher's Stone-a powerful gem that allows an alchemist to defy the traditional laws of Equivalent Exchange.Īs Edward becomes an infamous alchemist and gains the nickname "Fullmetal," the boys' journey embroils them in a growing conspiracy that threatens the fate of the world.įirst of all, I have seen the original FMA and although it was very popular and original, the pacing and conclusion did not sit too well with me. Known as a bio-mechanical engineering prodigy, Winry creates prosthetic limbs for Edward by utilizing "automail," a tough, versatile metal used in robots and combat armor. The brothers are rescued by their neighbor Pinako Rockbell and her granddaughter Winry. Instead, they suffered brutal personal loss: Alphonse's body disintegrated while Edward lost a leg and then sacrificed an arm to keep Alphonse's soul in the physical realm by binding it to a hulking suit of armor. Ignoring the alchemical principle banning human transmutation, the boys attempted to bring their recently deceased mother back to life. After a horrific alchemy experiment goes wrong in the Elric household, brothers Edward and Alphonse are left in a catastrophic new reality. Nudie’s 1976 Cadillac El Dorado is hanging on the wall in the bar and all three floors of this 12,000 square foot venue feature displays with vintage suits and country music artifacts. Nudie Cohn was a legendary clothing designer who outfitted bedazzled looks for Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams Sr., Bob Dylan, and Elton John. Nudie’s is a newer music venue, but SO GOOD. It’s not as throwback as Toostie’s or Robert’s, but it’s a good place for contemporary country music. Legends Corner – Right on the corner of Broadway and 5th, Legends is another solid option for live country music. filmed his video for “Why Don’t We All Just Get a Longneck.” Fun Fact: The Stage is where Hank Williams, Jr. The dancefloor is big and crowded, so it’s a fun place to dance and socialize. I like to grab a table up on the balcony which overlooks the stage and dance floor. If that’s the case, there are many other venues on lower Broadway to check out. The Stage – Because Tootsie’s and Robert’s are so famous and so small, they are sometimes WAY too crowded for you to really have fun. Just get there early to sign up and you can say you performed at Tootsies! If you want your shot, they have an open mic every Saturday from 12-5. Today, many of the top up-and-comer singer/songwriters play here. It’s said that Willie got his first songwriting job after singing at Tootsies. Famous early customers were Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Mel Tillis, Roger Miller, Webb Pierce, Walon Jennings, Patsy Cline, and many more. Toosie’s back door is across the alley from the Ryman Auditorium stage door, and many legends would duck into Tootsies after their show. Tootsies Orchid Lounge – Tootsie Bess bought the place in 1960, and since then, Tootsies has been the gold standard for Lower Broadway honky tonks. If you’re on a budget for food, try the Recession Special which is a Fried Bologna Sandwich, chips, and a PBR for just $6. Find a seat and be sure to tip the band when the jar passes around. They still sell apparel and boots as well, but this small venue is some of the best country music you’ll find in Nashville, if you ask me. It started out as a boot store and eventually added a jukebox and then live music. Robert’s Western World– For legit country music, Robert’s Western World is my favorite. Nashville Broadway BarsĮveryone has their favorite honky tonk spots on Lower Broadway and you can’t go wrong with any of them, but I’ll share my top picks. Give them some love! If you tip them a $20 they’ll play just about any song you want (within reason).įAMILY TIP – Most of the Nashville honky tonks allow all ages before 6pm so it’s fine to bring the kids to hear some music. There are no cover charges but BRING CASH to fill the tip buckets for the hard working musicians who are going to entertain you all night long. The early sets are usually more acoustic and the late night sets get wild and loud with inebriated patrons (and lots of bachelorettes) dancing into the wee hours. Yep, there is music on lower Broadway almost ALL DAY. The musical acts do sets from 10am-2pm, 2pm-6pm, 6pm-10pm, and 10pm-2am. Classic rock is also very popular down there along with some excellent blues and occasional jazz. Walk down Broadway between the Bridgestone Arena and the River, and you’ll see that Music City lives up to its name with an incredible level of musicianship spilling out of the windows of the Nashville Broadway bars.ĭon’t expect to hear just country music. In such a case, make sure that the front wheels are blocked securely.Ĭaution: If you remove a wheel and begin to work without making sure that you jacked up the car and blocked it securely, the vehicle can do a lot of damage to itself - and to you - if it falls. The only time you don't want the parking brake on is when you have to be able to rotate a rear wheel or remove rear brake drums to inspect the brakes. If you can't get to level ground or wait for assistance, you change the tire at your own risk.īe sure that your gearshift is in Park (or in First if you have a manual transmission) and that the parking brake is on before you jack up the vehicle. Remember: These precautions won't eliminate the risk of changing a tire on an incline. If you get a flat tire on a hill and can't coast to the bottom without killing the tire completely, park close to the curb, turn the wheels toward the curb, and block the downside wheels securely to prevent the car from rolling. It could save your life.Īlways park a vehicle on level ground before you jack it up. You can find a very affordable model that just lets you call 911, road service, and those you'd want to notify in an emergency. If you don't have a cellphone, hang a white rag or a white piece of paper out of the driver's side window and wait for the highway patrol to rescue you.ĬarSmarts: Even if you hate cellphones, I recommend that you buy one and keep it in the vehicle for emergencies. Don't exit the vehicle instead use a cellphone to call road service or an automobile association such as the AAA. Not only can you be seriously injured, but you can also fall prey to carjackers. Never change a tire on a freeway or highway. This may not keep you from getting hurt if the car rolls off the jack, but at least innocent motorists and pedestrians won't have to deal with a runaway driverless vehicle! Tip: If you find yourself faced with the job of changing a tire and you have nothing with which to block the wheels, park near the curb with the wheels turned in. (Chocks are available at a low cost at auto supply stores.) Keep whatever you use for blocks in the trunk so that you don't have to go hunting around if you have to change a flat tire. Use bricks, wooden wedges, or metal wheel chocks to block the wheels at the opposite end of the car from the end that is to be raised. Never jack up a vehicle without blocking the wheels to keep it from rolling.People have been crushed to death when vehicles that were improperly secured fell on them. If you don't, you run the risk of serious injury or even death. You must use jack stands when you work underneath your vehicle. They should never be used to hold a vehicle in place. Jacks are used only to get a vehicle off the ground. |
